How to Create a Safe Sleeping Environment for Your Baby

Sleep, especially during the earlier weeks and months of your baby's life, will make up a large part of their routine, and it's key to establish safe and secure sleeping habits from the beginning. We've compiled a list of tips, trick and products to help you create an environment for your baby that is snug and safe.

Choose a safe sleep surface:

Your baby should always sleep on a firm, flat surface, such as a crib, bassinet, or portable crib. Avoid using soft surfaces, such as adult beds, sofas, or waterbeds, as they can increase the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). The Red Castle Cocoonababy Nest fully adheres tothe medical recommendation to sleep babies on their back. The elongated semi-fetal position in the Cocoonababy allows babies who have lost their known landmarks in the womb of their mother to feel safe and content. Cocoonababy is an ergonomic cocoon designed for use in the cot during baby's first months as it reassures babies and help them adapt smoothly to life after birth.

Keep the room at a comfortable temperature:

Your baby's room should be kept at a comfortable temperature, around 68-72°F (20-22°C). Overheating can increase the risk of SIDS, so it is important to avoid overdressing your baby or using heavy blankets. We recommend a room thermometer like the Gro-Egg Room Thermometer, which also doubles as a handy night light when needed!

Use a safe sleep bag

A safe sleep bag is a wearable blanket that keeps your baby warm and secure. It is a safer alternative to blankets, which can cover your baby's face and increase the risk of SIDS. Check out the Grobag Pip Panda Print Newborn Snuggle Sleep Bag 1.0 Tog to keep your little one snug.

Avoid clutter:

Your baby's sleep area should be free of clutter and toys. Keep the room simple and uncluttered to reduce the risk of accidental injury. You can use our Dreambaby Storage Toy Chain to keep toys out of the way.

Keep the room dark:

Your baby's room should be kept dark during sleep time to promote healthy sleep habits. If you need to use a nightlight, choose a low-wattage bulb and place it out of reach of your baby. Try the Clevamama Bedtime Blackout Blind to block out any light, ideal for when you're on the go or when baby needs to sleep during daylight hours.

Make sure your baby is well rested:

A well-rested baby is more likely to sleep through the night. Encourage your baby to get plenty of daytime sleep and try to establish a consistent bedtime routine.

Follow safe sleep guidelines:

Always follow the safe sleep guidelines recommended by sleep consultants, which include placing your baby on their back to sleep, using a firm and flat sleep surface, and avoiding exposing your baby to tobacco smoke.
